On February 14, 2007, Gurbanguly Berdimuhammedow, a dentist, was sworn in as President of Turkmenistan succeeding President for Life, Saparmurat Niyazov who died of cardiac arrest December 21, 2006. He beat five other candidates, household names;Amanyaz Atajykow,Isanguly Nuryyew,Asyrnyyaz Pomanow, Muhammetnazar Gurbanow & Orazmyrat Garajayew, on election day, February 11,2007. The weather must have been ideal as there was a 95% turnout with the winner receiving 89% of the vote.
Opposition leader Nurmuhammed Hanamov still in exile was unable to attend the inauguration.
